The university also owns and manages the Durham World Heritage site in association with Durham Cathedral. In 1991, thanks to a joint venture between the university and Teesside University, the Joint University College on Teesside of the Universities of Durham and Teesside (JUCOT) was established in Thornaby-on-Tees, in the Stockton-on-Tees district, and in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, 48 km south of Durham. The QS World University Rankings 2025 ranked Durham 89th in the world, while the QS European University Rankings 2025 placed Durham 27th in Europe. Durham awards a scholarship, known as the Durham Scholarship, to undergraduate and PGCE students from low- and middle-income households, including all students who receive a loan from maintenance subject to resource conditions.
The SRC at Durham University was formed in 1907 with representatives from Durham Faculties, the School of Medicine and Armstrong College (also in Newcastle).
